Indradhanush Magazine: Pundit Atmaram Vishwanath

A forceful writer, fearless journalist, committed historian, excellent essayist, and a social worker par excellence, who came to Mauritius as an envoy of Manilal Doctor in 1912 to edit the “Hindustani”. In the absence of the latter, he led the leaderless Indo- Mauritians during the First World War with the Indian patriotic song “ Bande Mataram”. He remained a bachelor throughout life and dedicated his entire life to the promotion of Hindi Language and Indian Culture in Mauritius. He wrote “Mauritius ka Itihas {History of Mauritius} in 1921 and it was published at Poona, India in 1923. His other monumental work “Hindu Mauritius “ was published in 1936 on the occasion of the centenary of the arrival of Indentured workers in Mauritius. In the forties of the 20th century, he became a priest of the Arya sabha and edited the “ Mauritius Arya Patrika”, “Arya Vir- Jagriti”, and “Aryodaye” until his demise in 1955 at Port Louis
